SPECIAL EVENTS
As of September 1, 2007, to reduce waste from special events of all sizes on campus, the University has established a special event recycling policy that requires events that serve beverages in bottles and cans (plastic bottles, glass bottles, aluminum cans), to order bottle and can recycling bins and garbage bins in equal number and place them next to each other. Each event must make attendees aware of the recycling program.

It is proven that when recycling bins and garbage bins are located next to each other, more people will chose to recycle. Events are also encouraged to reduce waste and recycle paper and cardboard as well as compost food and compostable materials. By recycling and composting you allow your guests to continue their recycling habits and help Stanford increase its recycling rate.

For recycling and composting collection services on campus, submit a work order to PSSI/Stanford Recycling via this webpage: Recycling/Composting Work Order or call (650) 321-4236 or email recycling@pssi.stanford.edu.

BOTTLE AND CAN RECYCLING SERVICE
Plastic water bottles, aluminum cans, glass bottles, and other kinds of containers can be recycled at special events on campus. Below are the steps to take to determine your needs:

What kinds of containers can be recycled?

We accept alumnican cans, aluminum foil, steel/tin cans, glass bottles and jar, plastics bottles labeled #1- #7, all types of plastic packaging labeled #1 or #2, and milk and juice cartons and boxes.

We do not accept aerosol containers or polystyrene (aka Styrofoam).

Here is a link to a list of what is recyclable on campus: Acceptable Materials.

How many containers do I need?

We provide 32 - gallon plastic recycling bins for your recycling needs. Recycling bins must be ordered in the same number as garbage bins so they can be placed side by side at your event. The charge per bin is $7.86 (please call our office for most current rate). This rate includes delivery and removal of recycling bins.

Each of our 32 gallon special event recycling bins, holds either 120 aluminum cans or 100 plastic water bottles. To determine how many recycling bins you need, consider the number of people that you expect and the number of drinks a person will consume during your event. Multiply these and determine how many bins are needed to recycle all of the bottles and cans your event will produce.
