In 2008, Stanford University diverted 64% of its waste away from the landfill. Through a rigorous and comprehensive program of source reduction, reuse, recycling and composting, Stanford University commits itself to continuous improvement in overall waste reduction, moving towards an ultimate goal of zero waste.

Peninsula Sanitary Service, Inc. and the Stanford Recycling Center (PSSI/Stanford Recycling) provides recycling, composting, and solid waste management services for the greater Stanford University community, including collection, processing, and marketing of recyclables, collection of food and compostable materials, and operation of the Stanford Recycling Drop-Off Center. PSSI/Stanford Recycling helps educate the community about the benefits of reducing, reusing, recycling, and composting waste and the impacts of landfilling waste.
