The Santa Clara County Household Hazardous Waste Program can help you properly dispose of your home chemicals and toxics. Visit their webpage at http://www.hhw.org or call (408) 299-7300.
Chemicals accepted by the Household Hazardous Waste Program fall into one of six hazard categories:
- Flammables include paints, dry or wet, petroleum based products, and polishes.
- Corrosives include acids, bases, batteries, and drain clog remover.
- Toxics include poisons, pesticides, gardening chemicals, ammonia, and solvents.
- Oxidizers include pool chemicals, hydrogen peroxide, iodine, and perchlorates.
- Misc. include propane, helium, small oxygen tanks, smoke detectors.
- Biohazardous include medical waste; prescription drugs, used sharps, including syringes, needles, and lancets.
PSSI can accept refrigerators that have had the freon and the oil removed. PSSI will remove the freon and oil for a fee. Items containing Cathode Ray Tubes (CRT), including televisions and computer monitors have been deemed hazardous waste by the State of California's Department of Toxic Substance Control because of the 5-7 pounds of lead and other metal contained inside. We will be collecting them for free during the clean up, but only if your name and address are on the item (a requirement by the State).
