Solid Waste and Recycling Specifications for New and Remodeled Buildings
on the Stanford University Campus

Compactor - Garbage or Cardboard

General
Compactor garbage service should be used when one location is expected to generate more than 45 cubic yards of garbage per week. These units may be the best alternative for locations that are extremely tight for space and where buildings are clustered so that access to the compactor is relatively close. Custodians are mainly responsible for removing garbage from the buildings on campus, but occasionally faculty, staff, or students will want to use it. A cardboard dumpster will still need to be placed next to the compactor unit.

    Service
  • Service for these compactors are generally more expensive than frontloader dumpsters.
  • PSSI can service these dumpsters up to five times per week, Monday through Friday.
  • With a compactor, the whole unit is picked up with a roll-off truck and taken to the landfill, therefore there will be no receptacle for trash for approximately two hours.
  • Units serving kitchens are sanitized on a regular schedule. All others are sanitized upon request.
  • They range in size from 15 cubic yards to 30 cubic yards.
  • They can be ordered in a range of colors.

    Specifications

  • In order to service the dumpster, the truck needs 45 feet of access and should not have any overhead hazardous (i.e. wires and tree branches).
  • Standard 209 inch wheelbase truck (i.e. Roll-off) has a turning radius of 40 feet, curb to curb diameter is 83 feet, and wall to wall diameter is 88 feet.
  • Below are the general specifications for different size compactor units, including size, electrical, and concrete pad requirements.
  • Electricity must be supplied to the unit.
  • Exact specifications of the unit will be determine once a manufacturer is chosen which will be done eight weeks prior to installation.
